The laboratory and blood bank at Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital was established in July 1999 and since then it has been working successfully. The laboratory is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and performs about 300 tests of all types per day. The laboratory has come a long way in terms of sophisticated laboratory equipment, modernization and automation.

The Laboratory is well equipped having three analyzers (Microlab-200, Microlab-300 and Semi-automated SELECTRA  E Chemistry analyzer) for routine chemistry tests. Viral markers, hormones and tumor markers are performed on ELISA plate reader. Electrolytes are run on SEAC FP20 flame photometer. Arterial blood gasses are performed on the latest and sophisticated GEM Premier 3000 analyzer which gives 10-12 parameters in about 2 minutes time.

Hematology section has automated blood analyzer by Sysmex Japan, which performs about 1000 CBC’s per month with each result taking approximately 1 minute. CA-500, coagulation analyzer is the latest addition in the laboratory. It can perform almost all coagulation tests with accuracy and precision. The results are far superior then by manual methods.

The blood bank works round the clock and provides safe and screened blood for transfusions in emergency and during routine surgical procedures. Every blood bag is screened for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV and Syphillis. The laboratory has two sanyo blood bank refrigerators (One has 50 bags capacity while the other has 300 bags capacity) in which blood is kept at optimal temperature of 2-6°C all the time, till transfusion. The average work-load per month is 600 blood bags. The cost of one screening and cross match Rs.600/- which is extremely low while comparing with the other hospitals of the city (one screened and cross-matched bag costs anywhere from Rs.1000 to Rs.2500)

Histopathology and microbiology specimens are daily sent to pathology department of Lahore Medical and Dental College (LMDC) for Processing and reporting. The laboratory is also well equipment in terms of routine laboratory equipment having microscopes, water baths, centrifuges, hot air ovens, incubators, storage refrigerators, automatic pipettes, glassware etc.
The laboratory and blood is supervised by a highly qualified pathologist and other well trained, experienced laboratory staff which includes laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants and computer operators.  The following are the staff members of the GTTH laboratory:

Improvements
1.
Recently Arterial Blood Gas Analyzer (ABG) has been installed to facilitate the Blood Gas Analysis.
2.
With the availability of ELISA equipment, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are now regularly performed on this machine. More over, most routine hormones like T3, T4, TSH, LH, FSH etc are also done by this method at much reduced price cost.
3.
Complete blood counts (CBC) are being performed on automated hematology analyzer which can perform up to 40 tests per hour.
4.
For routine chemistry there are two semi automated chemistry analyzers. A fully automated chemistry analyzer with a capacity of performing approximately 100 tests per hours.
5.
The long term demand for increased blood storage capacity has been met with the purchase of large blood bank refrigerator having capacity of 350 bags.
6.
Electrolytes are being performed on our new electrolyte analyzer.
7.
The laboratory has purchased new routine general items like microscope, centrifuges, automatic pipettes and water baths.
8.
Work space of laboratory has almost been tripled with separate phlebotomy, special chemistry, blood bank and hematology sections.
