Department of Medicine, GTTH comprises of two Units 40 beds each & Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Our Unit handles Medical Emergencies 24 hrs a day, seven days a week and offers outpatient services six days a week.

The faculty of GTTH has a strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate education and research. The department encourages inpatient and outpatient referrals of complex problems for diagnosis and treatment in the various sub specialities of Medicine. Our Department is responsible for care of all general medicine inpatients and the training of internal medicine interns and residents. The faculty also provides consultation services to Surgery, ICU, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and other medical specialties both in ambulatory and inpatient settings. Members of the Section are also active in undergraduate teaching, curriculum development and research. The faculty organises and runs a number of weekly clinical and research meetings and participates in Continued Medical Education (CME) activities throughout the year.

Research Activities/Programmes
The section is engaged in extensive research and on average handles ten different research projects annually. The Section also publishes regularly in peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals. The Section organises several General Practitioner training programmes on various GI and liver problems and offers short term endoscopy training on specified expertise. Key areas of research are functional dyspepsia, IBS, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B and portal hypertension.Head of the Department Prof. Dr Nusrat ullah Chaudry is Editor of Journal of Pakistan Society of Gastroentelogy & GI Endoscopy while Dr. Shamail Zafar is reviewer for Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology.

Highly qualified and experienced faculty is associated with the section, which has contributed significantly to scientific research and training in the fields of gastroenterology and haepatology at national and international levels.
